Scientific Director & Team Lead - Medical Communications

Position summary

As a member of the Envision Pharma Group Scientific Center of Excellence, a Scientific Director & Team Lead is responsible for leading (with an Account Management counterpart) all account-associated activities (including scientific direction and strategy, project management, and resourcing) within a discrete account, or a ‘work stream’ within a larger account, as well as applying expert knowledge of the market, therapeutic area(s), and product positioning to develop high-quality scientific content for projects that support our clients’ strategic objectives. As part of a multidisciplinary team, a Scientific Director/Team Lead also line manages a Scientific writing team (typically 2–3 team members) within the assigned account.

Key responsibilities

How you will make an impact at Envision Pharma Group:

Account strategy and planning:

• In collaboration with their Account Management counterpart, provides overarching scientific, strategic, and tactical direction/leadership for the assigned account or work stream
• Develops and maintains strong working relationships with external stakeholders and engages in discussions of science and strategy with both clients and external experts
Content development:
• Demonstrates up-to-date expert knowledge of the therapeutic area(s), client and competitor product(s), the market, the compliance/regulatory environment (general and client-specific), and international standards for disclosing medical/scientific content
• Applies the knowledge to develop high-quality, scientifically accurate, strategically aligned, ethical, and compliant content that realizes client and thought-leader objectives and passes client medical/legal review
• Develops content for a range of project types, writing styles, and media as appropriate to target audience(s) and to meet client objectives
• Contributes to scientific strategy development and recommends communication approaches for optimal support of the client’s strategic objectives
• Critically reviews the team’s work and provides feedback to ensure scientific accuracy and strategic alignment
• Participates in, or may drive, client meetings and onsite programs, developing materials and delivering presentations, as needed
People/line management:
• Ensures the well-being of all Scientific team members/line reports, providing support and guidance as required (as well as approving timesheets and vacations)
• Undertakes contribution planning and develops/implements training plans for direct line reports, in line with Company policy
o Identifies appropriate opportunities and challenges for team members, ensuring optimal team development and retention
o Manages, with input from HR/senior managers, both high-performing (progression planning, etc.) and low-performing (PIPs, etc.) team members
• Manages/negotiates team resource for assigned account/work stream and participates in recruitment activities, as needed

Project leadership:
• Drives the implementation of, and ensures adherence to, processes/procedures that align with internal and client requirements/standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies
• Manages and prioritizes own and team workload, delivering to agreed timeline and budget, to meet client/business needs
• Working with Program Support/Account Management, provides input for project/program specifications and budget generation
• Drives project status/milestone tracking and out-of-scope reporting to ensure project profitability
• Undertakes negotiations with external partners regarding implications of changes in scope of work, timelines, and other delivery parameters – or escalates, as appropriate

Business development:
• Drives the development of scientific content for new business opportunities/proposals and participates in pitch presentations
• With an in-depth knowledge of EPG multichannel business offerings, and by keeping up to date with market developments, recognizes or proactively identifies new project opportunities through interactions with clients and external experts

Skills and experience required

• Typically 6–8 years of medical communications (or HEOR/market access, as appropriate) experience, preferably gained across both publications and non-publications medcomms deliverables
• A strong command of the English (or Japanese or other, as appropriate) language and ability to communicate complex scientific ideas effectively, both orally and in writing
• In depth knowledge of assigned therapeutic area(s), as well as ability to assimilate new information, working across or switching between multiple areas, as needed
•Ability to interpret, evaluate, and communicate (in a variety of formats and styles) complex scientific and clinical data
• Expertise in use of online and other data sources for literature searches and information retrieval
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat
• Experience with reference (eg, EndNote or Reference Manager), graphing (eg, GraphPad Prism), and tracking/approvals (eg, Datavision, Zinc) software is preferred
• Previous scientific account leadership experience, ideally in a global environment, is preferred
• Previous line management/mentorship experience, ideally in a global environment and/or with remote line reports
