Scientific Director - Publications/Med Comms - US

Position summary

A Scientific Director is responsible for leading (with an Account Management counterpart) all account-associated activities (including scientific direction and strategy, project management, and resourcing) within a larger account, typically with a complex, strategically demanding mix of deliverables, as well as applying expert knowledge of the market, therapeutic area(s), and product positioning to develop high-quality scientific content for projects that support our clients’ strategic objectives. As part of a multidisciplinary team, they may also review the scientific content of others’ work, and may mentor/support less experienced writers.

Key responsibilities

Account strategy and planning:
• Provides overarching scientific, strategic, and tactical direction/leadership for the assigned account (in collaboration with the Account Management counterpart), maintaining strong working relationships with external stakeholders and engaging in discussions of science and strategy with both clients and external experts
Content development:
• Demonstrates expert knowledge of assigned therapeutic area(s), client, and competitor product(s), the market, and the compliance/regulatory environment (general and client-specific); and develops high-quality content for a range of project types, writing styles, and media as appropriate to target audience(s)
• Provides critical review and feedback on other team members’ work
• Participates in client meetings and onsite programs, and drives or contributes to scientific and strategic discussions with clients and external experts, as needed
People management:
• May mentor less experienced scientific team members, as well as providing general scientific and strategic guidance and advice to other members of the team. Contributes to performance reviews
• Identifies/negotiates team resource requirements for assigned accounts to ensure effective delivery
• Participates in recruitment activities as needed

Project management:
• Manages and prioritizes own and project team workload, delivering to agreed timeline and budget
• Drives implementation of, and ensures adherence to, agreed processes and procedures (internal and client-related) and expert use of tools (eg, Datavision, Zinc, Clear), as appropriate, to track and manage deliverables
• May provide input to projects specification and budgets, and drives project status/milestone tracking and out-of-scope reporting to ensure project profitability, including negotiation with external partners regarding scope changes, escalating as appropriate

Business development:
• With an in-depth knowledge of EPG multichannel business offerings, recognizes or proactively identifies opportunities for organic growth and wider new business, and flags to Account Management lead; drives the development of scientific content for new business opportunities/proposals and participates in pitch presentations

Skills and experience required

Minimum and essential qualifications, experience, and technical expertise required:

• An advanced degree (or equivalent relevant experience) in a life sciences or clinical discipline
• Typically, 8–10 years of medical communications (or HEOR/market access, as appropriate) experience, preferably gained across both publications and non-publications medcomms deliverables
• A strong command of the English language and ability to communicate complex scientific ideas effectively, both orally and in writing
• In-depth knowledge of assigned therapeutic area(s), as well as ability to assimilate new information, working across or switching between multiple areas as needed
• Ability to interpret, evaluate, and communicate (in a variety of formats and styles) complex scientific and clinical data
• Expertise in use of online and other data sources for literature searches and information retrieval
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat
• Experience with reference (eg, EndNote or Reference Manager), graphing (eg, GraphPad Prism), and tracking/approvals (eg, Datavision, Zinc) software is preferred
• Previous scientific account leadership experience, ideally in a global environment, is preferred

• Ability and confidence to develop and maintain strong working relationships, and willingness/ability to discuss science and strategy with external stakeholders at all levels
