Position summary

The Director will report into the Divisional Managing Director to manage and maximise the profitability and growth of 90TEN whilst ensuring a highly motivated, productive and collaborative team. They will take on significant responsibility in the Division Management Team where they will contribute to leading the wider team to deliver exceptional work while maintaining the company values and culture.

The Director will be ultimately responsible and accountable for ensuring that the quality of work, counsel, creativity and strategic thinking delivered to our clients is of the high standard that is expected at 90TEN. The Director will play a vital role in ensuring that we retain the culture at 90TEN that makes us so special, which is collaborative, respectful, ambitious, open and honest.

New business growth, both organic and new, will be a key objective for the Director, who will be expected to prospect for new business, lead pitches, secure the business and ensure an effective client on-boarding, with high levels of client satisfaction maintained.

Key responsibilities

Financial management
• Build financial business plan for the public relations ‘division’
• Provide monthly updated management reports against financial business plan to Managing Director
• Take proactive steps to maximise client profitability to meet agreed targets
• Drive understanding of the importance of completion of fee forecasts, timesheets, resource planners and other key management processes
• Review monthly P&L, identify strengths and risk factors and together with other senior colleagues take proactive corrective action

Commercial leadership
• Be perceived as thought leader in public relations through participation in industry events
• Develop and enhance the public relations service offering to ensure we continue to meet the client’s needs and provide innovative market-leading solutions
• Actively contribute as part of the senior management team, and help lead the successfully implementation of the vision and goal
• Deliver to 90TEN’s business plan and objectives
• Identify and form strategic partnerships with suppliers to help drive growth and support new service offerings
• Take full accountability for deliverables, and act confidently in all areas with limited or no supervision
• Take on responsibilities to support office-wide activities
• Brief team on office-wide activities and developments
• Ensure participation and visibility in office activities including office meetings, away days, client parties, etc
• Represent 90TEN externally through networks and connections
• Ensure teams complete all administrative tasks

Client leadership
• Provide overarching input into client strategic planning
• Continuously update and maintain knowledge of the market in which clients operate
• Keep up to date with industry innovations
• Ensure that behavioural change techniques are considered in all client projects
• Ensure that the correct team structures are in place to deliver ongoing client satisfaction, loyalty and retention
• Identify opportunities to develop relationships with senior marketing, communications and board level contacts within client companies
• Ensure bi-annually client-satisfaction reviews are conducted, taking corrective action where necessary
• Demonstrate the highest level of client counsel skills and act as a strategic business partner
• Immerse self in client’s business and combine this understanding with marketing communications expertise to impact business objectives
• Identify opportunities to provide added value to clients

Team leadership
• Provide inspirational leadership to the team, creating opportunities for individuals to work on challenging and stimulating work
• Create a creative, entrepreneurial and collaborative culture
• Conduct annual bench strength surveys to identify areas of weakness and produce short-, mid- and long-term recruitment plans to minimise these
• Act as a coach and mentor to colleagues, creating a culture that recognises individual contributions
• Identify training opportunities to help upskill the team where necessary
• Demonstrate excellent feedback skills and take every opportunity to provide guidance, counsel and support to team members, taking corrective action where necessary
• Actively plan to meet career aims of colleagues. Regularly engage in dialogue with colleagues to ensure an understanding of their needs and aspirations. Delegate projects and activities to stretch performance and capability
• Actively help to source new talent through regular meetings and ongoing networking
• Promote the importance of learning and development

Business development
• Proactively seek business opportunities to deliver against new business targets
• Constantly seek opportunities to deliver organic growth
• Identify and support opportunities with new clients and manage procurement initiatives such as RFI’s
• Take overall responsibility to ensure that credentials meetings and pitches are of the highest standard and in accordance with the 90TEN new business planning process
• Continuously identify opportunities to network in the industry and to promote 90TEN to potential client contacts
• Conduct regular competitive landscape reviews to ensure 90TEN is positioned effectively

Skills and experience required

• 10+ years of experience in the industry
• Demonstration of leading large pieces of business in excess of £1million in fee income
• Demonstration of high-level strategic thinking
• Experienced and knowledge in all aspects of communications, including, but not limited to corporate communications, public affairs, reputation management, crisis communications, branding, media relations and digital and social media
• In-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and the healthcare communications industry
• The individual will have a track record of winning and servicing international and UK accounts
• Demonstration of thought leadership in the industry
• Conduct themselves to the highest ethical standards in every aspect of work
