Position summary

The Associate Director will oversee and drive the delivery of account strategy, ensuring each programme is implemented effectively, professionally and in-line with the agreed project specification and budget. The Associate Director will be responsible for supporting the Senior Account Director/Account Director with organic account growth and will maintain relationships with clients in an account leadership capacity, demonstrating fully-developed competencies in strategic counsel and issues management.

The Associate Director will be responsible for each of his/her accounts, supporting the Senior Account Director/Account Director to ensure programme outcomes are in-line with defined evaluation metrics. The Associate Director will maintain clear sight of account objectives and will work with the Senior Account Director/Account Director to hone the strategy and team approach as necessary. The Associate Director will ensure that each account is sufficiently resourced and is responsible for providing updates to the Director/Managing Director/Chairman on all aspects of account strategy and resourcing as required.

A primary role of the Associate Director is to drive the new business process and, either alone or in collaboration with the Director/Managing Director/Chairman, is responsible for leading new business pitches.

As a member of the Management Team, the Associate Director will be responsible for driving the direction and development of 90TEN and, depending on specific skill-set, will hold responsibilities relating to company administration. The Associate Director should be an advocate for the company internally and externally and may be called upon by the Managing Director/Chairman to formally represent the company.

Key responsibilities

Strategic thinking
• Be confident in developing communication strategies and support the Senior Account Director/Account Director to do so
• Oversee the client account relationship and provide strategic counsel, taking responsibility for communicating primary account/programme objectives and strategy, both to clients and to the team
• Own issues management capabilities and actively provide both proactive and reactive counsel to clients. Support the Senior Account Director/Account Director in delivering issues solutions
• Define and set programme evaluation metrics in collaboration with the Senior Account Director/Account Director
• When required, assume responsibility for revising the strategic approach and communicating changes to the team
• Continually update and maintain understanding and knowledge of the market in which clients operate
• Keep up to date with industry innovations and demonstrate forward thinking to clients
• Take every opportunity to make recommendations and suggestions to the Director regarding best practice and drive new business growth

Account management
• Support the Senior Account Director/Account Director in delivering to the team any updates regarding programme direction and resourcing
• Take overall responsibility for the quality of the team’s work and provide constructive feedback on the tone and creative direction of the work, usually directly to the Senior Account Director/Account Director
• Maintain and share key contacts with team. Maintain excellent relationships with influencers, third parties, key senior client contacts and journalists

Client service and satisfaction
• Provide on-going strategic counsel to the client
• Maintain regular contact with the team to update them on client feedback
• Ensure that the delivery of campaigns and events across the team is at the highest standard through reviewing materials on a regular basis and advising on approach
• Empower the Senior Account Director/Account Director to own the day-to-day client relationship and act on client feedback
• Create opportunities for the Senior Account Director/Account Director to discuss suggestions and recommendations on opportunities to improve future campaigns
• Lead annual client reviews with the Director to make continuous improvement to client service

Commercial and financial management:
• Oversee budget management
• Oversee and review programme budgets, including budget summaries, proposal sheets and budget breakdowns
• Review forecasts on the account to enable future planning ensure campaigns are delivered on target
• Oversee year-end and campaign reconciliations and, as required, provide support to the Senior Account Director/Account Director
• Plan resource from a company perspective and support the Senior Account Director/Account Director in account resource planning

Teamwork and team leadership
• Demonstrate coaching expertise and take every opportunity to provide guidance and support to all members of the team
• Oversee key team meetings and attend/contribute as required
• Share client and company information to keep the team informed and engaged
• Support the Senior Account Director/Account Director in empowering team members to drive and own projects
• Oversee account planning and support the Senior Account Director/Account Director in prioritising the team’s work to ensure completion according to client requirements and deadlines
• Complete performance reviews, objective setting and career and development planning for direct reports and where appropriate for others within the business. Act on results and outputs
• Support the team in driving the quality and direction of the team, highlighting any potential issues to the Director
• Coach, mentor and motivate team members and particularly the Senior Account Director/Account Director; ensure objectives are met and individuals have clear career plans
• Support the Senior Account Director/Account Director in making sure the team operates in the most effective and efficient way to meet client needs
• As required maintain involvement in team/management/group initiatives
• Regularly engage in dialogue with colleagues to ensure an accurate view and understanding of their workload. Work with the Director to help prioritise, meet deadlines and respond to aspirations. Delegate projects and activities to stretch performance and capability
• Help to shape the agency by recommending to the Management Team potential new staff members for appointment
• Own one or more roles on an operational level outside of client work
• Encourage team to complete all administration and reporting internally and in line with client requirements

Business development
• Take responsibility for new business development. Explore opportunities with contacts as much as possible
• Support the Senior Account Director/Account Director in identifying and securing organic growth opportunities
• Own and lead new business pitches, with support from the Director/Managing Director/Chairman as appropriate
• Provide suggestions to Directors for opportunities to grow the overall business
• Prepare and attend credentials meetings
• Proactively contribute to the development and updating of case studies and other credentials materials
• Lead any and all new business activity including research, brainstorms, making client contact and presenting, as appropriate, and empower other team members to do so

Skills and experience required

• 8-10 years of experience in the industry
• Demonstration of leading large pieces of business in excess of £500,000 in fee income
• Demonstration of high-level strategic thinking
• Experienced and knowledge in all aspects of communications, including, but not limited to corporate communications, public affairs, reputation management, crisis communications, branding, media relations and digital and social media
• In-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and the healthcare communications industry
• Experience in leading and winning both international and UK pitch business
• Conduct themselves to the highest ethical standards in every aspect of work
